Turn a video into a GIF
Pick the moment, the length and the size, and get a GIF that plays everywhere: chats, Slack, docs and READMEs. Your video stays on your computer.
How to make a GIF from a video
- Drop your video above.
- Play it and press use current frame to set where the GIF starts, then choose the length.
- Press Make GIF and download it.
Keeping GIFs small
GIF is an old format: every frame is stored as a full picture with at most 256 colours, so size grows quickly with length, width and frame rate. A 480 px wide, 15 fps, 5 second GIF is usually 2 to 6 MB. Halving the width roughly quarters the size. If you need longer or sharper clips, an MP4 is far smaller, and most chat apps play MP4s inline too.
Good to know
- Each frame gets its own colour palette, which keeps colours accurate.
- The GIF loops forever, like GIFs are expected to.
- Sound is dropped, because GIFs cannot carry any.

Questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The file is read and processed inside this browser tab. It never leaves your computer, which is also why there is no size limit and no queue.
What is the longest GIF I can make?
Up to 15 seconds here. Longer GIFs get very large; for long clips use the compress tool and share an MP4 instead.
Why does my GIF look grainy?
GIFs only have 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients get dithered. Videos with flat colours (screen recordings, animations) look best as GIFs.
